We Now Return to our Regularly Scheduled Program
You've probably been losing sleep at night. Tossing and turning. Wondering what we've been up to...
The weather here was gorgeous when the Perry's came to town. Mrs. Linda came to the knitting night with me and made a cowl for Theo. We had a delicious dinner at Orzo. Mr. Ernie approved the yummy Spudnuts. Michael took his parents to Monticello while I worked on Saturday then cooked beef and vegetable soup while they watched the LSU game. Mrs. Linda and I went to the Fall Fiber Festival and Montpelier Sheepdog Trials. It's a shame the only picture I have from their visit is of some alpacas.
Mrs. Linda gave me a crash course in sewing and I am so excited to get started on a certain project I can't speak of since it pertains to Christmas. It was a very nice visit and I am so grateful to have such wonderful parents-in-law.
When the McChargue's came to town it was cold and dreary. We saw Frankenstein (1931) at The Paramount. We took a drive along Skyline Drive to see the fall foliage. We got a new toilet!
We went to enoteca after work for dessert and drinks. It was chilly enough to enjoy warm apple cider donuts from Carpe Donut and a glazed donut from Spudnuts.
We cheered on Michael and his classmates at their innertube water polo game (which they won, but unfortunately had to forfeit the next game in the playoffs because of schedule conflicts). We saw Gypsy: a musical fable at Live Arts. We ate at the Downtown Grille before seeing Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson at The Paramount. We got cupcakes before work and saw Inglourious Basterds after work on Saturday. We had brunch in Fredericksburg with the Love-Bakers then went to the Belvedere Plantation fall festival where...
...we got "punkins"...
...we got lost in a maze...

...and we slid down a slide.
Finally the sun came out and we took advantage of the beautiful day to visit Monticello. I really enjoy the house tour and the new visitor's center is very spiffy.
Another wonderful visit and again I am so grateful to have such wonderful parents. I am looking forward to more family time during the holidays.

...and we slid down a slide.Needless to say I was not up for level 2. We also raced some mini pedal tractors on a track. I failed to test my brakes ahead of time and crashed into the railing. I now have three lovely bruises on my legs. It was fun, especially seeing mom's face when she was cruising along the track. She beat me even though I think I started out a minute before her.
Another wonderful visit and again I am so grateful to have such wonderful parents. I am looking forward to more family time during the holidays.

Transmogrify
...is actually a word. I used it on Saturday while at a friend's house for BBQ and football, and everyone just kind of looked at me. I felt a little silly and thought maybe Dad made it up, but dictionary.com confirms that it's a word. In case you were wondering...
I've subbed three days so far- 5th and 6th grade Math and elementary ESL. I loved subbing for ESL and it helped make up my mind that ESL is what I want to teach.
This afternoon I started my second job at Alakazam. It's a really neat local toy shop on the downtown mall. I am really going to enjoy working there. I'll be working Tuesday afternoons and Saturdays. I can catch the bus at the corner right by our place on Tuesdays which is perfect since there isn't really any parking around the downtown mall. So today was my first time on public transportation in Charlottesville by myself. The bus driver was very helpful and I tried to hide my excitement. It's the little things, you know.
I think the fall weather is starting to settle in :) Theo will finish his second round of steroids in a week. It seems to be doing the trick this time. Hopefully the new food is what's also helping. It could also be the changing seasons. I think Westie owners generally go through this for a year or two until the cause of the allergy is determined. Nothing like a lesson in patience.

The Battle at Stanardsville
After perusing the shop tents Michael pauses for a picture with Robert E Lee (far right) and others in period dress. There were tents in this area to demonstrate what the campsite would have looked like.
The Stanardsville Reenactment is one of the longest running reenactments in the country.
Those cannons are loud. A narrator gave us the background information about the battle.
The Confederates outnumbered the Yankees. We wondered if this was proportionate to the actual numbers from battle or if the Yankee reenactors were from out of town...
It was about a 30 minute drive north of Charlottesville. The weather was perfect. So I'd say it was a very neat and inexpensive experience. I'm so glad I finally got to see a reenactment. I've been wanting to since last fall when I saw a sign for one.
Symphony Under the Stars
Saturday night we went to a free concert at the UVa amphitheater. The orchestra played classics including music from West Side Story, South Pacific, and Somewhere Out There from Fievel.
There was a large crowd, and it was a lovely evening. This is the kind of thing that makes us love Charlottesville.

Avast, me hearties!
In honor of the upcoming Talk Like a Pirate Day (this Saturday) Michael embraced his pirate heritage and brought home the booty. A suitcase full of Vitamin water from his past rotation.

Howdy, It's Your Long Lost Blogger
We love car rides. We went on a hike yesterday with our friends Pete and Fiona. We took Theo even though his allergy issues aren't completely remedied. More on that later. It was a lovely drive out of town on Barracks Road. Soon after you leave the "city" in almost any direction you can see mountains and unbelievably gorgeous farms.
On our way back we walked along the river. I guess you can say we've had a relatively dry summer. Theo jumped off rocks into the cold water.
Here, he checks out some stacked rocks. I think the day went down as one of his favorites.
The update on his condition is that we had to put him on steroids, which has helped. He still gets the urge to lick his paws and manages to lick them while wearing the cone. He is able to hang out without the cone on as long as we are around to catch him when he starts licking every now and then. We are a week into a rabbit and potato kibble diet which will tell us if the continuing allergy problem is from an allergy to his previous food (chicken kibble). With the wearing of the cone has come sleeping in our bed since he can't fit in his crate with the cone. Oh well. I guess we held out as long as we could with that one. I will say that he is quite the cuddler. We like to call him Cuddlefus Rex i.e. the King of Cuddles. It was about time for a new nickname, don't you think?
I am an approved substitute for Charlottesville City Schools and so far I have missed three phone calls. Two during a calligraphy lesson and one while I was volunteering with one of the students I worked with in the spring. One of the ESL teachers contacted me to work with a fourth grader during Math in the morning. This is nice since I think it's good for me to do something productive and being in the classroom environment certainly can't hurt. The automated Subfinder system apparently has some kinks that need to be worked out. It also appears that when you miss a call it moves on to the next person. C'est la vie.
I have started my online felt ornament selling on Etsy. You can see items in my shop on the right side of the blog. I have sold two ornaments so far. Yippee.
I'm almost finished with Calligraphy lessons, I hope. And I'm gearing up for PieFest on October 3rd as well as the Fall Fiber Festival at Montpelier, visitors, and eating donuts from Carpe Donut once it gets really cold. I'm most excited about Michael coming home on Thursday for good until January or February. Hooray!
