On Father's Day

Despite the fact that you are in Houston and not in Charlottesville I thought I'd share some happy memories of you in celebration of the dad that you are.

  • Waiting my turn to dance with you when you'd play your records at night
  • Coming home from church to that music - even though I always thought it was too loud, I missed it when you stopped playing it
  • Picking us up from school
  • Tapping out syllables on your back
  • Rolling down the windows in your old white truck
  • Carrying me into the house when I faked sleeping in the car
  • Taking us to have beignets in the French Quarter
  • People watching
  • Coming into Michael's with me to get scrapbooking supplies
  • Going out to dinner
  • Performing squirrel therapy
  • Surprising me with an impromptu birthday trip to Disney World
  • Splitting Snickers while waiting for Myriam to get home from school
  • Riding in the Triumph
  • Letting me travel
  • Encouraging me
  • Showing me what it means to be a person of integrity
I love you.

Hello Muddah, hello Faddah

What can I say about camp? There are about 60- 70 kids in camp. They were 4-6 graders this past school year. It's basically day care. So unfortunately the kids aren't interested in many activities. After a tumultuous Monday lacking in any kind of structure I came home and researched typical camp activities. They were totally not interested on Tuesday. The good news is that there are plenty things on the schedule such as going to the movies, swimming, golf, outdoor activities, crafts, and field trips. The kids will play basketball all day long if we let them. Hey, if it ain't broke...

There is a group of girls (most of whom I know from volunteering) who are into my corny jokes, crafts, and friendship bracelet making. We made father's day cards on Friday. There are about 15 girls interested in knitting so I am pretty excited about that. Several already know how to knit so they can help me out.

As far as I know I haven't been called any bad names yet- well besides being called a square. The kids can be pretty mean to each other and very disrespectful to the counselors. I have yet to feel discouraged and I am waking up each day and starting with a clean slate with the kids. After all I think they just need a good role model.

Knitting

...is for squares. Or so I was told by a sixth grader last week.

But I should probably backtrack for a bit. Let's start with Michael's birthday! I will first point out the balloons atop the china cabinet. They are still afloat from the Edible Arrangement I received for my birthday. I just can't bear to pop them. They must be breaking some kind of record. Next we'll admire my fine decoration making abilities. The crepe paper was folded together during Disney's Robin Hood. It was just as good as I remembered. Maybe better. I put the Napkin Origami book to use again and folded birthday napkins into party hats. I bought candy and put it in ramekins. We fried catfish and made potato salad. Anne brought strawberry spinach salad.
I made a cake which I read about on my favorite blog. (You really should check it out!) The icing she made is her mom's recipe (she calls it Cloudburst Frosting). It has a flour mixture in it and it is one of the best icings I think I've ever tasted. It's not overwhelming sweet.I made the cake exactly how Alicia Paulson did it. A layer of seedless raspberry jam and a layer of frosting in between the layers with frosting and strawberries on top. If you looked at her blog you may have noticed that she lined the cake pans with wax paper. I highly recommend this. The batter is very thin and the cake is super moist. This seems to be the perfect combination for making it impossible to get the cake out of the pan. I am glad I used the wax paper. Basically this is the best chocolate cake I have made and quite possibly the best I have ever eaten. You have also noticed coffee mugs (unfortunately not the cups and saucers since we were a large party). I also recommend coffee with the cake.

It was a delightful evening especially since the Tigers beat UVa in the college world series. Is that correct? World series? It sounds funny since I don't think the whole world participates. Anyway... Michael was able to hold his head up high after all his trash-talking on the Eastern Shore.

We took Theo to the dog park on Sunday. He tried in vain to get the dogs there to play with him. They were all pooped by the time we arrived. It was cute to see Theo go up to each of them desperately trying to entice them to chase him. He of course needed a bath when we got home.

It was a good weekend. Michael will be home for a month on Tuesday. Theo and I can't wait.

I think I'll make a new post to tell you about the first week of summer camp. It will also have to wait until tomorrow.

A demain!

Fireflies

...make my heart happy! Yesterday evening Theo followed a firefly around. It seemed like the firefly was playing with him. Theo wouldn't bite at it but he would just hit it with his nose then shake his head as if he tasted something gross. It was so cute.

What have I been doing sans my husband? Painting, walking Theo, knitting cupcakes, cooking, watching movies I remember from my childhood (The Little Mermaid should be arriving tomorrow) and listening to music that would normally not be allowed to play aloud (like old school Dixie Chicks or Dido- guilty pleasures- all I'm missing is a little Mariah Carey which I shall commence listening to... now- and it's so good). I'm going to stop with the parentheses because it's getting a little lengthy but Mariah brings me back to the day I got my first stereo, casting aside that neon colored AM/FM radio with a tape player. The first CD I bought was a Toni Braxton CD at Blockbuster. It was a tough decision between Toni and Mariah's "Music Box." These things make being without him more manageable.

I haven't updated in several days because I didn't think I had anything to say. Saturday I made myself go to the City Market. I bought some salad greens, broccoli, and strawberries. The strawberries were pretty ripe so I had to use them quickly. I made Strawberry Bread and oh.my.goodness. It was fabulous. Another recipe from our River Roads cookbook of menus for entertaining. I invited Christie over for bread and coffee and some crafting. We had a nice time and she invited me to dinner with her, Pete, and his two friends that were in town. We went to the South Street Brewery. It was a very pleasant evening. All that was missing was Michael.

Yesterday our duplex neighbor invited me over for their weekly Sunday evening grilling and drink-having. Well, I was invited to the after dinner part. I had planned on hanging with Theo, watching Titanic on TNT, and finishing a knitted cupcake. So I went over for an hour or so. In between their side of the duplex and the next duplex they string paper lanterns. It's a sweet little set-up.

Today did not start so well. We made it halfway up the hill for our morning walk when I started feeling nauseated. Strange. So we stayed in and took a little nap. I have been feeling fine all day. Theo however has not been doing so well. Not to get too much into the details but there has been blood in his stool pretty much all day so I am keeping an eye on him and I took away a bone that could be causing the problem. We did check out a dog day care this morning so they could assess whether or not he plays well with others. He passed with flying colors then pooped on their floor. It seems like a nice place. He won't be cooped up in a kennel all day. Wait. Maybe I should explain myself because you are probably thinking I have lost my mind. Everyday I will be able to come home during lunch and walk Theo, however Fridays are field trip days and no one will be here (at least in June) to walk Theo at noon. So he will go to doggie day care where he will undoubtedly be in puppy heaven. This will also be great for socialization, exercise, and for prepping him to be boarded when needed.

So this evening was my first day of training for camp. We did a couple icebreakers to meet everyone. I will be with the 4th -6th graders. I will be in charge of a group of 10 and all but one of my fellow counselors have worked this particular camp before. They seem nice and hardworking. There are lots of exciting things on the schedule for the kids so I am really looking forward to it. The rest of this week consists of planning, training for things like mentoring, ESL, and CPR/First Aid, and a ropes course (yay!). The days should be pretty long so I can't promise another post until the weekend. Which brings me to this: Michael will be back on Thursday. eeeeeeeeee!!! We can't wait to see him. We're planning to fry fish for friends on Saturday. I am so very excited about the cake I will be making.

Well so much for not having much to say. Time to get some sleep.
